My first outing to Chisbury may not have been a complete success – attempts to follow a lovely circular route around Chisbury Wood seemed thwarted by every bramble-blocked and nettle-knitted stile – but, fortunately, the abundance of hare and discovery of this wonderfully situated 13th-century chapel made for a pleasantly memorable excursion. Set just outside of the hamlet, a prehistoric hill fort, and with Savenake, the Kennet and Avon Canal and Great Bedwyn on its doorstep, the walking routes available to take from here can be tailored to suit every level and interest. Just keep those limbs covered up! Visit the English Heritage website, to find out more.
